Grifols Engineering to construct new BST plant

Grifols Engineering (GE) has been awarded the engineering tender for the construction of the new tissues and culture plant of the Blood and Tissues Bank of Catalonia (BST). The work will be performed in partnership with OHL, with whom GE has formed a joint venture corporation (JVC).

The new BST plant will meet the highest GMP standards, and includes rooms for handling cell material and tissues, both in an open and sealed environment, together with cryogenic and quality control units.

In addition to constructing the plant, the work includes logistics and final product storage systems. The facilities include Kardex automatic storage systems and chambers, at -30ºC, at 5ºC and at room temperature. The Kardex systems consist of vertical rotating stacks controlled by software which manages storage and dispensing of the product. This logistics technology saves space and costs, and delivers more efficient storage services.

GE has wide experience of this type of installation, both as regards biotechnological processes and at the hospital logistics level, particularly together with Movaco, another Grifols group company.
